4 Common Skincare Myths

In the world of skincare, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. That's why we've asked our team of expert aestheticians to debunk some common skincare myths we've likely all heard. From whether you should moisturize oily skin to the necessity of wearing sunscreen indoors, we're here to arm you with skincare knowledge for a healthier, glowing complexion!

#1: “Moisturizers aren’t necessary for oily skin.”

Moisturizers are an important step in everyone’s skincare routine and skipping moisturizer can actually cause your skin to produce more oil. For those with oily skin types, the key is to look for non-comedogenic moisturizers (meaning they won’t clog your pores), which will reduce your chances of breaking out. Our favorite moisturizer for oily skin is our Sheer Lightweight Moisturizer which hydrates without leaving your skin feeling greasy or adding extra shine!

#2: “I work in an office, so I don’t need to wear sunscreen every day.”

This myth is officially busted! Unless you sit in a windowless room and don’t drive or walk anywhere, you’re probably getting more sun than you would think! Whether you’re looking to reduce your risk of skin cancer or stay looking young longer, sun protection is by far one of the most important things you can do for your skin. Before you leave the house, always apply sunscreen to your face, neck, chest, and top of hands. (This sunscreen is our go-to, plus it has the prettiest sheer universal tint!)

#3: “You must treat body acne differently than facial acne.”

False! Contrary to popular belief, the ingredients that treat acne on your face are equally beneficial for addressing acne on your body. If you're battling body breakouts, we recommend  using leave-on exfoliants containing salicylic acid into your skincare routine. This powerhouse ingredient helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, calm redness, refine skin texture, and help prevent future breakouts. Remember to follow up with SPF during the day for added protection!

#4: “Pores open and close.”

That’s not how they work! They can appear more or less visible to the eye based on the amount of excess oil or debris. When we use steam to "open" your pores, what’s really happening is that the cells on the pore’s surface are loosened up. So why do our aestheticians bother applying steam to your skin before extractions? Because the moisture and heat help to soften the top layer of your skin, making it easier for them to extract buildup! With the removal of buildup, pores can appear smaller!
