Moxi Skin Treatment
One of our favorite collagen-boosting skin treatments for tightening pores and softening fine lines and wrinkles (for all skin types all year long!) is the Moxi laser. Unlike traditional skin lasers that can require up to 3 weeks of downtime, our patients are loving the way MOXI uses gentle microscopic laser energy to refresh the surface of the skin. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about how the Moxi works, what makes a good candidate, the glowy benefits, and more!
What is Moxi Laser?
The MOXI Laser is a non-ablative treatment that targets skin elasticity, sun damage, fine lines, and large pores. Unlike regular lasers that go deeper into the skin, Moxi uses a gentler light to focus on the outer layer of skin called the superficial dermis. This layer is important because it contains collagen and elastin fibers, which help keep your skin firm, smooth, strong, and elastic.
How Does Moxi Work?
At the heart of Moxi's effectiveness lies its fractional technology. Moxi emits microbeams of light energy into the skin, creating tiny treatment zones while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue untouched. This fractional approach allows for faster healing and minimal downtime compared to dated laser treatments. Over time and with multiple sessions, Moxi helps reduce sun damage, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and enlarged pores, resulting in a smoother, more youthful complexion!
What to Expect During A Moxi Laser Treatment:
MOXI is loved by patients for its quick and easy treatment in under an hour. Referred to as a “lunchtime procedure,” it can take as little as 25 minutes to complete - depending on the area you are treating. If you need a quick and easy skin pick-me-up, the MOXI laser is a great way to squeeze in a little self-care into your busy day! Now, let’s get into what to expect during a treatment at Defy Aesthetic:
Cleansing: The process begins with thorough cleansing of the skin to remove any makeup, dirt, or oils. This ensures that the laser can effectively penetrate the skin without any barriers, allowing for maximum results.
Numbing: Once your skin is nice and clean, your nurse practitioner will apply numbing cream to your face. This numbing cream is usually left on for about 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure begins to minimize any discomfort or sensation from the laser.
Glasses On: Once your skin is numb, it’s time to get started! During this part of the treatment, we will provide you with special glasses to cover your eyes while the laser is on. These protective glasses are designed to filter out the specific wavelengths of light used in the laser treatment while allowing you to see through them clearly enough to follow instructions and communicate with your practitioner.
The Laser Treatment Begins: Next, your nurse practitioner will use the Moxi handpiece to deliver controlled pulses of light energy to the treatment areas. (Other than the face, you can treat the neck, décolletage, hands, and arms.) During the treatment, you may experience a mild warming sensation or a slight prickling feeling as the laser passes over your skin. Most of our patients don’t report pain or discomfort, thanks to the numbing cream applied beforehand and the gentle nature of the Moxi Laser!
Immediately After: After the treatment is complete, your skin may appear slightly pink or flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. This is a totally normal response and any redness will subside within a few hours to a day. Some patients also might notice a slight "sandpaper" texture to the skin immediately afterward which will improve during the healing process.
What is Aftercare Like?
One of the best aspects of the Moxi laser is its minimal downtime! Most patients can resume their regular activities immediately following the procedure, although it's important to follow these aftercare instructions:
Limit Direct Sun Exposure: It's important to avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible while your skin is healing. During this time, your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight, and exposure can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and prolonged redness. If you’re going to be outdoors, protect your skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and re-apply every 90 minutes for maximum protection. Bonus points for wearing a hat!
Use Gentle Skincare Products: While your skin is healing, we recommend using gentle skincare products to promote healing and to keep your skin hydrated. Start with a mild cleanser designed for sensitive skin, a lightweight moisturizer (a heavier formula can block pores), hyaluronic acid, and an SPF of 30 or higher. You can resume your normal skincare routine with active ingredients at the one-week mark!
In the days and weeks after treatment, you'll see your skin gradually improve in how smooth and even it looks. This happens because your skin starts making more collagen and replaces damaged cells. For best results, we recommend 3 Moxi Laser sessions spaced several weeks apart, depending on your individual skincare goals!
